This young Lad began his career at 14 when he started advising large businesses on how to do business on the Internet. As a 16-year-old high school student in 1998, he co-founded Internet Web Hosting company-Directi Group with a $600 investment (a seed that sprouted a global conglomerate that is believed to be worth over $400 million today). Turakhia became a millionaire at 18, saw his company’s customer base pass 100,000 at 21. The scary thing is the “kid” is just getting warmed up!
Founding a technology company can be an exercise in excitement, adrenaline, stomach-flips and occasional nausea. But for Turakhia it was just a stepping stone as he wanted to reach a new level all together that to in a short span of time. Divyank Turakhia is running his seventh business, contextual ads company Media.net. Their start-ups are BigRock, Codechef, ResellerClub, LogicBoxes, Webhosting.info and Talk.to. Turakhia is frequently invited to speak at industry conferences and workshops and at top universities in the U.S., India and China where students soak up his advice on Entrepreneurship. He spends much of his free time trying to do the same thing for fun. His hobbies include airplane Wing Walking, Aerobatic Flying, Ballooning, Sky Diving, Scuba Diving, Hobby Flying, Paragliding, Sailing, Quad Biking, Trekking, Rock Climbing and other pursuits as well. If you would have noticed Turakhia has all hobbies revolving around adrenaline rush, that is because he loves speed and adventure.
At 13, he co-created the world’s largest game and computer program written in GWBasic along with his brother, Bhavin Turakhia, who is also a co-founder of Directi along with his younger brother. It took them nearly the whole year to finish the program. When they were near completion they ran into a problem that they hadn’t anticipated – GWBasic was not designed to allow a program of this size to run – they could have switched to QBasic but wanted the program to run in GWBasic and hence didn’t make that switch. In order to complete the program, they started “optimizing” the existing code by re-coding portions of the program, using smaller variable names, and even switching command statements such as “PRINT” to “?” so that they would save 4 bytes. The end-result was an ultimate business simulation game.
The game starts with an animation sequence which talks about how your business partner deceitfully takes over your entire company and you are now left with no money. The object of the game was to start from scratch, create a successful business, and get 100% of the market share. To grow the company, the player must manage resources in terms of money and employees, and create and manage ongoing budgets for various departments such as HR, Research & Development, Marketing, Sales, Finance, Legal etc. The game even allowed the player to perform corporate treasury operations by investing money on the stock market. Playing the game was educational as well as a fun experience about the corporate world. Divyank owns a Cessna172, in Mumbai, and it was his first plane. He even has a plane in the US, a Cirrus SR22.He also loves to drive sports cars and is a proud owner of Porsche 911.
Directi has continued to grow rapidly since its formation. The company currently has over 550 employees. The new headquarters, of the company is evaluated to be worth $45 million that is 100,000 square feet in size. The new facility includes really cool amenities including a Bowling Alley, a fully-equipped Gym, Pool, Table Tennis, a large DVD Library, a Movie room, Multi-Player gaming room with Arcade games, Xbox’s, Playstations, WII’s, a Salon where employees can get free massages, haircuts, pedicures, manicures etc, a full-fledged canteen that provides free lunches, dinner and even snacks. Now isn’t that cool to be associated with such a funky and cool organisation, that cares about its employees and their needs. That in true sense is called being ‘pampered’. Well thats not all the company also offer Concierge Services to all employees so that their day-to-day tasks and chores are effectively taken care of. It also sponsor various educational courses for all employees to foster personal growth which benefits them as well as the organization. In addition, Directi’s attendance policies are structured such that each team has their own flexi-timing. This enables the employees to plan their work hours and personal time in efficient manner.
